AMD & Windows 8 PC – Building a better Future – I hope !

So,

Our £60 second hand windows XP PC is on its last legs – it’s a dual core something with 512M ram and struggles ….I mean really struggles… to the point that the wife wants to throw it out the window…

So I thought it time to get a new machine. Now being techy , I’ve built PCs before… So buying a setup already built wasnt my idea of fun or cheap

I wanted to spend a max of 300 all in for a system and it HAD to be windows 8..

So to start with I looked at processors. I stumbled upon a site that mentioned AMD did a APU (processor and graphics card in one)… This looked idea as we’re not PC gamers and only use it for mild photo editing, surfing and office…

AMD A8 5600K Black Edition 3.6GHz Socket FM2 4MB L2 Cache Retail Boxed Processor - £61.71 +VAT
This was my end choice and funnily enough was cheaper than the 5500K

Good, no need to get a graphics card then… nice

Next – motherboard. Nothing funky here so bagged a cheap one

Biostar A55ML2 Socket FM2 VGA 6 Channel Audio mATX Motherboard – £29.74 +VAT

Memory was next – I decided to go for 1x4Gig stick for the moment and get another 1x4Gig next month if the machine needs it

Corsair DDR3 1600MHz 4GB 1X240 DIMM Unbuffered – £22.20 +VAT

HDD – Speed of booting and access is important for us so I decided to go for the middle ground and get one of the new hybrid drives  – A mix of SSD solid state fast cached access plus the storage capacity of a traditional drive

Seagate 500GB Sollid State Hybrid Drive (SSHD) – £54.16 +VAT

Shove in a PSU, Case and DVD writer and we’re done
Tesla 500W 12cm Fan ATX PSU - £12.49 + VAT

Casecom MA-1199 Piano Black MATX Tower Case - £13.32 + VAT

Liteon Ihas120 20x Dvd±rw (dual ±r)/ram Sata Drive - £11.66 +VAT

in Total that came to £246. Not too bad for my budget of 300. Although I still needed to get an OS to go on it…

Next episode I’ll go into the construction of the PC…

My first (in game) few days in Minecraft Xbox – A review.

Have you ever wandered around the vista that is Skyrim – running from town to town.
Have you ever lept round a corner of a building – guns a blazing – not knowing what might be there
Have you ever run through the forest in FarCry trying to reach your next town.

If you’ve done any of these you have had it easy… Your first night in Minecraft and its following days have nothing on anything you’ve ever played upto now.

Day 1. (9pm real time)

I find myself in an open world (albeit it rather blocky) with pigs and cows looking at me inquisitively as if I’m some kind of childs toy (or turd on an otherwise clean street).

I know its going to be dark soon and I am fully aware that bad things happen in the dark so I immediately start digging up anything i can find to make a safe place to hid for the night…

I build a 5×5 building, two stories high with a roof.. Id also shopped down some trees and built a crafting table so was able to make a door. A furnace next to the crafting table meant I was able to make torches… Darkness was coming – I shut myself in my tomb and waited… It got dark outside. I heard noises… I dug down from my house and started making a tunnel and underground buildings… I put up torches so the nasties wouldn’t spawn in my safehouse.

Night passed – I SURVIVED ! – the joy of it ! I removed my two stone doorpieces and slowly, carefully looked outside. I looked left. I looked right. All clear.. MUST get more provisions…

The next few days were spent in the same way – Nervously leaving the house first thing. hastily gathering provisions during the daytime and hurrying back to the house at night. Id now built a door and second floor/balcony to the house and expanded the underground section where Id found some goodies. Id never played a game before where I constantly had a check on where the house was in relation to my place in the world.. It was my only safe haven for when night came – Id never played a game where I actually was nervous about wandering too far from home..

Day 5. I was feel pretty chuffed with myself – Id taken on a few nasties – dug down to my first big cavern/mine and cleared it out.. Crafted some nice bits but still jsut scratched the surface of what this game can offer.. I decided I needed to make a bow and arrow – this needed string (from Spiders). I left the house on the hunt for a spider… BOOM as I left the house. In my complacency I diddnt look left & right and a creeper thing crept up on me from behind and blew up taking out both me and half the house… Maybe I need stronger building materials. I re-spawned somewhere nearby on the map and had a fit as I could not see my home! After wandering around I luckily found it and repaired the damage.

I need armor ! ….

Its now 1:20am… Where the hell has that time gone ?? I need sleep… And to plan my next adventure….

Project: FIX-A-GATE !

Well here goes …

I’m not much of a DIY-er so I’m prepping as much as I can !

Background is that now we have a trailer tent and a puppy we thought it would be a good idea to have some driveway gates fitted.

We have an 87 inch gap and we want the gates to be around 5 foot high

As we have 2x3ft (36inch) gates that equates to 72 inches – leaving about 15 inches for posts. we plan to get 4×4 posts which means that the total width is 80 inches

On the left is a brick wall – its not very sturdy so I would prefer not to secure a post to it and instead – dig it into the ground. I’m hoping this would remove 1-2 inches of the remaining 7 leaving 5-6inches.

On the right is the main house wall. Problem this side is that we have waste water pipes (1 1/2 inch) running horizontally.

We were wondering about fitting two posts to the house wall – one with notched cutouts where the pipework is and then the second bolted/screwed onto it to “fill the gap” needed. 2x 4 inch posts would equal 8 inches – too much… So its probably wiser again to dig the post in and butt it as close to the water pipes – 4+1 1/2 = 5 – just about right…

This doesn’t take into account any gaps required for the hinges to be fitted or if the gates are slightly oversized.. so this may all change based on that….

Image

We bought two of these from ebay which would fit the gap… Now to fit them…

INGREDIENTS

  • POSTs x2 – 6-7ft tall- 4×4 Pressure treated
  • POSTCRETE enough to secure 3 posts 12-18 inches in…
  • HINGEs – (see below for link) – 6 in total
  • BOLT – (see below for link) – Lockable
  • LATCH – (see below for link)
  • SURFACE BOLT – (see below for link)

POSTS

Now looking at this with my father-in-law it seemed like a good idea to fit the posts into the ground. We decided on 5ft tall posts (visible) that are 4×4 square PRESSURE TREATED so they don’t rot as much

http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/548024

These posts need to be 12-18 inches into the ground (in concrete) so we’ll need to dig down quite a bit and get some postcrete to fix them. Making sure of course they are the correct distance apart (including any gap for hinges etc.. and that they are vertical !

Image

Once the posts are “in” its time for

HINGES

ImageThese are the ones I’m thinking of using and having them show “out to the road” so to add some nice decoration to the gate. Im planning on having 3 per gate so will need 6 in total. Available from Screwfix
http://www.screwfix.com/p/gate-hinge-straight-pair-black-610mm/30725

Im presuming that once the gates are up and fitted they will do their job but of course there is nothing stopping them swiging about so I’ll need some bolts etc..

BOLTS

Im looking at one of these for the top – its lockable so the kids dont “accidentally” open it from the inside and let the dog out

http://www.screwfix.com/p/gate-hinge-straight-pair-black-610mm/30725

LATCH

I think it would be wise to have a latch in the middle to add some extra strength to them.

One of these fitted should look nice with the hinges

Image
http://www.screwfix.com/p/gate-hinge-straight-pair-black-610mm/30725

SURFACE BOLT

Im after something to secure the bottom of the gate to the floor (only one needed as this should secure both together once fitted)

http://www.screwfix.com/p/standard-surface-bolts-galvanised-45x530x125mm/71028

Ive a bad feeling that the wind that blows through will not secure the bolt into the tarmac drive for long so in time this may need digging out and replacing with some more postcrete with a metal tube inserted to allow the surface bolt to slip in without tearing up the concrete…

And I think thats it – if I think of anything else I’ll add it to the list :)…

Can I make a candle from ear wax ? Would it smell ?

Human earwax (cerumen) wet type

Image via Wikipedia

…. and would it smell ?

Could we be looking at a new renewable source of lighting ? How much wax do we produce ? Could I make enough to fill a small jar or tea light ? would it burn ? what would it smell of ?

I’ve been searching the web in a spare 5 minutes as I need something to calm me down after a frustrating morning at work … Here is what I have found.

Well ear wax is created to protect the ear drum from foreign bodies (no, not the French!). Some sites are also saying its a poison to stop insects from entering the ear and climbing down the eustachian tube and causing damage (gross)

Japanese people have a different kind of wax to the rest of us ! apparently its dry-er.

Earwax is constantly being created and due to the movement of the head and jaw it makes its way to the outer ear where it dries up and flakes off…

From another site I found that Earwax is 60% keratin (used to make the outer layer of human skin and also toenails & hair), 12-20% long chain fatty acids, alcohols, squaline (a fat and anti-oxidant produced and is a natural moisturizer) & 6-9% cholesterol

From this I’m sure that if I could gather enough – then it would certainly burn with a wick
OH ! then I found this !!

Looks like it’s already been done on Mythbusters. From the reactions of the “busters” when melting the wax – the smell isn’t good !

And from the final test – It doesn’t work as a candle. Due to its makeup of hair / skin cells and the items above – it IS flammable but it doesn’t burn or melt consistently in the same way that a beeswax candle would.

So – There is your answer. You “could” get enough wax to make a candle (although you’d want the help of a few friends / animals to get enough) but even if you could, without refining it – you wouldn’t be able to turn it into a candle..

Just stick to your pound shop tea lights ! – they work and they wont make you gag with the smell !!!
